History

Before the construction of the first monastic establishment in the 8th century, the island was called "monte tombe". According to legend, St. Michael the Archangel appeared to St. Aubert, bishop of Avranches, in 708 and instructed him to build a church on the rocky island. Aubert repeatedly ignored the angel's instruction, until St. Michael burned a hole in the bishop's skull with his finger.

The Cloister

Due to the nature of the Mont and the way that the abbey has needed to be constructed, the cloister is on top of the rest of the abbey buildings and not at the centre of the complex. Despite this, the cloister which crowns the Merveille [1] has maintained the form and functions of other cloisters found in all other monasteries with just a few subtle differences which set it apart, turning it into a symbolic representation of an ideal monastic life.  Read more

Salle des Chevaliers

The Salle Des Chevaliers is an exceptional case of gothic Norman architecture. Located Underneath the cloister, the Salle Des Chevaliers is on level two of the Merveille and was built a little time after the Salle des Hotes. Built out of granite the Salle Des Chevaliers as seen the photo appears spacious with two considerable sized fireplaces. Read more

Introduction

When you first see Mont-Saint-Michel which is situated on the north Normandy and Brittany coast of France, between the city's of Saint Malo and Avranches  you see friary tall castle rising up from a flat bay of sand and water. This culture centre of Western Christianity is the border point of Normandy and Brittany in France.  Mont-St-Michel is truly magical picture of middle age man as well as his culture left to us. History

Tour Gabriel

In 1524 Gabriel de puy, a French military engineer built the Tour Gabriel to finish the Enceinte des Fanils, the walls built to protect the storerooms of the Abbey The ramparts were planned with an eye to the latest developments in the field of artillery, which made it possible to shoot in all directions in the least possible amount of time. The Bay

For many years, the bay around Mont saint Michel is considered a must see and a place to be explored when visiting the Mont. However in recent years the bay has become important for more than just tourist and sight seers, since the arrival of ecology scientific studies that have been carried out all over the bay due to the bays surprising natural phenomena.

Inspiration for the abbey  

A culture which goes back towards the 10th century narrates that the Archangel St Michel appeared to St. Aubert, bishop of Aranches, within a dream and requested him to construct a new chapel committed to St. Michael atop the granite mountain of which up to then was called Mount Tombe.
